Opposing the closure of the Slots at Kawartha Downs

Whereas the County of Peterborough has formally written to the Premier of Ontario expressing deep concern regarding the announced closure of the Slots at Kawartha Downs; and, Whereas the closure will result in significant job losses, and a substantial number of affected employees reside within the City of Peterborough; and, Whereas the economic impact of this closure extends beyond Cavan-Monaghan and affects the broader regional labour market, local businesses, housing stability, and household incomes in the City of Peterborough. Therefore be it resolved that: 1. The City of Peterborough endorse the concerns raised by the County of Peterborough regarding the closure of the Slots at Kawartha Downs; and 2. The Mayor, on behalf of Council, write to the Premier of Ontario, the local MPPs, Minister of Finance, the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, and OLG expressing the City’s concern regarding the loss of jobs affecting City residents and requesting that the Province reconsider the closure or provide a detailed transition plan that protects workers and the local economy; and 3. Staff be directed to assess and report back on any projected local economic impacts, including job loss estimates, income loss, and downstream impacts on City services and supports.
